Luxury Trekking Trip To Morocco

6 Days

Overview

This is a Luxury trekking trip to Morocco that offers stunning accommodation at the world-renowned Kasbah du Toubkal and an itinerary based on your individual desires which can include a trek up up Mount Toubkal. Your own personal mountain guide will be on hand for the duration of your stay to help with planning daily treks in the valleys and guiding to the summit. You can choose to walk as little or as much as you like.

All trekking is fully supported with a mule and muleteer to carry your luggage whenever required. Our treks take us from the village of Imlil along footpaths and mule tracks that wind through the lush, irrigated terraces, apple orchards, and walnut groves to other villages where you will have a glimpse into a way of life that has barely changed for centuries, and where traditional Berber values and hospitality have been largely unaffected by the outside world.

The High Atlas Mountains, which dominate the skyline to the south of Marrakech, have always played an important role in the city, not least with regard to commerce. Whilst Marrakech is in itself a fascinating city, a whole new experience awaits those who venture south into the mountains. With several peaks above 4,000 meters, the Western High Atlas is part of a larger chain of mountains that spreads from the Atlantic Coast in the west to Tunisia in the east. The mountains are home to the indigenous Berber people who have inhabited Morocco for at least 5000 years. The Berbers live in small clusters of earthen adobe houses that cling precipitously to mountainsides and are often only accessible by mule or foot.

Guests will stay full board in luxury accommodation at the Kasbah du Toubkal, which was described by Condé Nast Traveller as “having the best rooftop views in North Africa”. There are deluxe rooms but also luxury suites offering the highest standard, plus a hammam on the premises and a wonderful rooftop restaurant.

We will initially be based in the trailhead village of Imlil (just 40 miles from Marrakech) and a few days later move to a fabulous mountain lodge in the remote Azzaden Valley where peace and tranquillity prevail. The valley of Azzaden is a spectacular location and the Lodge is very comfortable offering similar levels of facilities to the Kasbah’s Garden House and allowing guests to stay right in the heart of the stunning Alas Mountain without having to compromise on comfort and style. Its architectural style is such that it complements the environment of the surrounding villages and the local environments, but there is also underfloor heating and a private hammam.

This experience is as much about relaxing and being hosted in beautiful lodges, as it is about trekking in Morocco and soaking up the vistas, atmosphere, and culture of the regions we visit. Everything is tailored to the desires of your party be they active and adventurous, or sedate and relaxed. This trip is very much about you! If you’d like to add to your trip it’s also possible to add on other elements such as a desert visit or a climb of Mount Toubkal.

Overnight camp trek from the mountain lodge

Strike out for 6 hours hiking up through groves of walnut and juniper trees, through stands of holm oak and red pine to cross the Tizi n’ Touti 2100m and into the Assaka plateau where we shall stop for our picnic. We now set out up and down the higher slopes, passing the Azib moussaka and down to the valley of Assif n’ Deknt and the Berber village of Deknt 1800m, where we are going to spend the night in Berber gîte. After breakfast, we set off for 6 hours of trekking and continued our second-day trek by climbing up through fields of potatoes and barley to the Assoul Campsite. Then follow up goat trails and stark winding slopes to traverse the Tizi n’ Tagudilte ( 2700m) where we will stop to see some impressive vistas of mountains and valleys. Then, descend amidst the juniper trees to our picnic site by a small stream, surrounded by an almost alpine atmosphere of mountains. From here we set off down to the head of the valley of Ait Ouazzaden, crossing the river to hike alongside irrigation ditches and small mills towards the last village in this valley ( Tizi Oussem ) and then to The Toubkal Lodge 30 minutes further.

Harder trek to the mountain lodge

Meet our guide and muleteers at Wirgane then start our 6-hour hike. We strike out the village of Tourourte to take the piste which leads up to the Tassa Wirgane National Park. At the village of Tassa Wirgane, we hike between juniper and redwoods to stop for our picnic in the midst of walnut trees near the forest in the valley of Assif n’Azerfsanne. Once refreshed, we set off up the slopes, passing through Berber hamlets until we reach the pretty village of Tizian (1600m), from where we climb a very steep slope that will take us to the Toubkal Lodge setting above Id Aissa village.

Two day trek to the mountain lodge

Continue along the valley for about an hour then go up the piste climbing up the village of Amzrouni where we shall overnight after in a gite d’etape. From this village, we set out for 7 hours to continue up to Tizi n’Iguiddi. Once this col has been traversed, we amble down a long sinuous path through areas of startling beauty to arrive at the village of Amsslane for our picnic. After lunch, we climb up a small col then down again to get to the very old village of Takkaint for the overnight.
